Day and Night Protection, Tailored to You

At Reasons to Smile Canberra, we provide two types of custom-fitted appliances to protect your oral health:

  • Mouthguards – for protection during contact sports

Custom Sports Mouthguards

Protection That Fits for Children and Adults Alike

Sports-related dental injuries are surprisingly common, and almost always preventable. A custom-made sports mouthguard offers reliable protection for the teeth, jaw, and soft tissues during high-impact or contact sports.

Unlike over-the-counter options, our mouthguards are designed from a precise model of your teeth, which means:

Better retention during play

Improved comfort and breathability

Effective shock absorption for teeth and bones

Less risk of jaw injuries or broken teeth

A range of colours to choose from

We make mouthguards for both children and adults, whether it's weekend football, school sports, or adult recreational activities.

Sports Mouthguard FAQs

Do I really need a custom-made guard?

Yes. Especially for contact sports. Chemist-bought guards often fit poorly and provide limited protection. A properly fitted guard stays in place and reduces risk far more effectively.

Absolutely. We can design a guard that accommodates your/your child’s orthodontic treatment and still offers excellent protection.

Children may need a new mouthguard each season due to growth. For adults, a well-made mouthguard typically lasts 1–2 years with proper care.

Night Splints & Sleep Appliances

Protecting Teeth and Supporting Better Sleep

Some damage doesn’t happen during the day it happens slowly, over time, while you sleep.

Our custom night-time splints fall into two categories:

Occlusal Splints for Grinding &
Clenching (Bruxism)

Grinding and clenching during sleep (also called bruxism)
can lead to:

  • Cracked or worn-down teeth
  • Loss of enamel and increased sensitivity
  • Damaged fillings or crowns
  • Jaw discomfort and morning headaches

An occlusal splint, sometimes called a night guard, is a slim, custom-fitted appliance worn during sleep. It doesn’t stop the grinding itself, but it does:

Mandibular Advancement Splints
for Sleep Apnoea

Some splints are designed not just to protect your teeth, but to support your breathing. These mandibular advancement devices gently hold the lower jaw forward during sleep, helping to keep the airway open and reduce:

We provide these devices only in collaboration with local sleep physicians, and only after formal diagnosis via a sleep study. Your comfort, health, and safety remain our top priorities throughout.

What to Expect

Consultation &
Symptom Review

We begin with a conversation about your needs, whether that’s protecting your teeth from grinding, or addressing sleep-related symptoms. If sleep apnoea is suspected, we’ll refer you to a trusted sleep physician for diagnostic testing.

Precision Fitting

We take a detailed digital scan or impression of your teeth to create a mouthguard or splint that fits securely and comfortably.

Appliance
Delivery & Review

Once your appliance is ready, we’ll ensure the fit is correct and explain how to use and care for it. For splints, we may also coordinate follow-up with your referring specialist as needed.

 Ongoing Support

We’ll check in with you during regular dental visits to ensure the appliance continues to fit well and function as intended. If you ever feel discomfort or need adjustments, we’re here to help.

Night Splints & Sleep Appliances

How do I know if I’m grinding at night?

Most people are not aware of this destructive habit. Some of the symptoms of grinding include waking up with headaches or tight or sore jaw muscles. Some signs of grinding include ridges on the sides of your tongue or the inner part of your cheeks, flat or worn teeth, cracked or broken teeth. Being aware of  such symptoms and signs will be indicators of grinding habits.

Not at all, when they’re made properly. Our custom splints are slim and precisely fitted, making them easy to wear and easy to sleep in.

Occlusal splints won’t stop grinding, but they prevent damage. Mandibular advancement splints may help reduce snoring and improve airway support, but only when prescribed and fitted as part of a coordinated plan with a sleep specialist.

With proper care, both mouthguards and splints can last several years. We’ll review the condition at each check-up and recommend replacement if needed.
